A summer house and its memories

A silk merchant chose this bend in the lake for his summer home in 1911. The objects he left behind still help us understand the house.

A summer house and its memories

Ordinary things, carefully kept

During the restoration, a box of ledgers and old menus emerged from the cellar. It recorded ice deliveries, boatmen and lemons brought over from nearby gardens.

The owner valued a house quiet enough for approaching boats to announce themselves. Preserving that sense of stillness became part of the restoration.

The floors that stayed

The first-floor terrazzo dates from the original building work. Each salvaged tile was lifted, cleaned and laid again by hand.

The original initials remain above the cellar door. On the way to dinner, pause to notice how a small detail can carry a century.

This adapted story and its characters illustrate the template experience.
